We are a “Beacon of Light” offering a path to spiritual upliftment and Black empowerment. Our worship experience offers seekers a connection to their African heritage as we pay homage to our ancestors. Sundays include our Youth Spiritual Development “Watoto Mungu” (Powerful Children) offering a true African-centered perspective that fosters each child’s spiritual gifts and connects them to the larger community. Sharing our worship space with our Cultural Center creates a dynamic tapestry of mind, body and spirit development and integration.
Shrine #10 in Houston, Texas is home to a community of innovators! Our Houston congregation is comprised of members separated by large distances, often requiring a 40-minute commute because of the vast size of the Houston Metropolitan Area. However, this distance does not deter member enthusiasm or stifle the fellowship. We always find ways to come together and uplift each other and our greater community-at-large.
In fact, our region has a longstanding tradition of being a viable and respected disaster relief center. From being ground zero for collecting donations during the Rwanda / Haiti relief efforts, to Shrine #10’s consistent showing as a place of refuge and source of much-needed supplies for individuals and families displaced by hurricanes. Though Shrine #10 became renowned for its response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, housings hundreds for months and providing other services, the region has provided similar efforts during nearly every hurricane the region has experienced since the church opened its doors in 1977.
In other words, “Ain’t no mountain high enough, ain’t no valley low enough, ain’t no river wide enough” to keep us from doing God’s will and serving our people. We believe fully in the ancient African wisdom that states, “I am because we are, and because we are, therefore I am.” This belief is often expressed in our region’s favorite mantra: “I need you, you need me, we need each other.” When you visit our Shrine, you are immersed in a growing movement committed to becoming our best selves!
